For years, as a caregiver, I found myself drowning in well-meaning but empty platitudes, sincere but misguided theology—or the harder wound: not silence itself, but the absence of presence from those who didn’t know what to say.

Few understood the trainwreck unfolding in my heart. Most days, I didn’t even have the vocabulary to ask for help.

After four decades in the caregiving trenches, I’ve learned to speak fluent caregiver.
This book—and this blog series—is born from that journey.

What This Series Is

A Caregiver’s Companion is a collection of bite-sized reflections—each one anchored in a quote, hymn, or Scripture that’s sustained me over the years.

Some are funny.
Some are raw.
All of them are honest.

My goal? To help you catch your breath, steady your heart, and know—deep in your bones—that you are not alone.

Whether you’re reading this from a hospital room, hospice bedside, or the front seat of your car with the engine running and your soul barely idling—I’ve been there.

What’s Coming

Each post in this series will feature:

  • A short quote or insight

  • A hymn or Scripture that helped carry me

  • A moment of reflection to encourage you

  • (And occasionally, a little humor to keep the wheels on)

You can read them in order or jump in wherever you are. Start here. Start late. Just start.

The Heart of It All

“Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart,
and you will find rest for your souls.”

— Jesus, Matthew 11:28–29

That’s the invitation. Not to do more, perform more, or get it all right.
But to come.

To bring your fatigue, your fear, your tears—and find rest.

Even in the chaos, there’s grace.

Welcome to A Caregiver’s Companion.
